This Flag flew over Camp Anaconda, Iraq on July 4th, 2004. Given to us by our “adopted” National Guard Platoon in Iraq. Thank you to all of our customers who donated directly, or favored us with their business that enabled us to donate directly. More than anything, thank you to all of our troops everywhere in the world.

We hope that you will join us in helping to support these fine organizations. As a local community store, we focus our giving towards the many small local charities and benefits in our area; leaving the national charities for national companies to support. At the bottom of this list, we’ll tell you a little about some of our favorites.

Here are some of our favorites with their links:

MooreMart– Gifts for the troops. Our good friend Paul Moore and his sister Carole Moore Biggio started sending packages to their brother stationed in Afghanistan. Then packages to his fellow soldiers. Then items for local schools his unit helped out. We were involved with similar gifts when some friends of ours were stationed in Iraq.

The difference is, for Paul and Carole, it grew. The troops who receive their packages often email back recommending other service people who could use a lift; and new items to send. As of November 2006, Paul and Carole had sent out 5000 packages to troops in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, and Walter Reed Military Hospital. Each package includes candy, instant meals, personal grooming items, glove warmers (Afghanistan), sun block (Iraq), and other things from home the troop’s request. Perhaps most important; every box has a handful of cards and letters written by people like you.

MooreMart, by the way, is not a store. It’s a name the troops gave to their packages because whatever they ask for, Paul and Carole manage to get it for them. Say a nine-hole golf course (pins, clubs, balls, etc.) so troops in Kuwait waiting to deploy into their unit in Iraq or Afghanistan can kill some time while they wait!

There’s no overhead, no paid stuff, just volunteers. So learn more by visiting their website, then send them some money, or some cards and notes for the troops, or both! Learn more at: http://www.mooremart.org

Bridges – Supporting local women escaping from abusive situations, or dealing with the effects of abuse. Learn more at: http://www.bridgesnh.org

Make-A-Wish – Yes, a national organization, but the local branch helps children right here. We have been privileged to help them fulfill four wishes: two pool tables and two hot tubs. They are incredibly professional, handle every detail, and always treat the entire family with the utmost respect. Learn more at: http://newhampshire.wish.org

High Hopes – Our own local New Hampshire group is similar to Mark-A-Wish, with a few differences:

  • All volunteer staff (low overhead)
  • No national money – everything is local
  • Wish recipients do not have to be terminally ill. We’ve helped them with two hot tubs. For some medical conditions, that hot tub can make a huge difference in the life of a child and their family for many, many years.

Meeting with a mother whose young child will need constant care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for her entire life, is an experience that I will never forget. Learn more at: http://www.highhopesnh.org
